About the event
Devanagari is a historically prominent Indian script.
Despite being such an ancient script, Devanagari has not been explored much in terms of calligraphy. This significant lacuna strikes out when compared to the multiple hands developed for the Roman script.
Decorative Devanagari is an attempt to explore the beauty of this script and to bring out the wonderful possibilities offered by the vertical lines, horizontal lines, ovals, curvatures and conjunctions in this script. Using newer, efficient and non-traditional tools for this script will provide a new dimension to limitless opportunities for exquisite interaction between positive and negative spaces. There is an excitement in doing Devanagari calligraphy because one can never anticipate which two alphabets might come together to give one, a new conjunction, in turn providing a new picture to draw and play around with. ‘Flourishing’ in calligraphy is considered to be a Western concept, integrating that into Devanagari can be challenging and satisfying at once. Decorative Devanagari is like a push forward for drawing Devanagari rather than just writing it, as has been done traditionally.
Decorative Devanagari opens the doors to the world of possibilities, this script can offer to the calligraphy artist.
