Introduction to Italic with Barbara Calzolari

Level - Beginner 

Italic Script or Chancery Cursive is a semi- cursive slightly sloped style of handwriting that was developed during the Renaissance in Italy. It is the most important script for the modern calligrapher as it is extremely versatile and capable of endless variations.

6:30 - 9:00pm India | 3:00 - 5:30pm Italy | 9:00 - 11:30am New York 

The Class will be 7.5 hours over 3 consecutive Saturdays of 2.5 hours each. There will be two options that you can choose from:

OPTION 1 - EXCLUSIVE

- Access to all 3 classes of 2.5 hours each

- Access to Google Drive link to upload homework and view/receive files

- PDF of Workshop workbook provided before class begins

- Access to video recordings of each class for 1 week ( video will be available to watch for 1 week after the day of the class) 

- PERSONALISED feedback will be given for your homework submitted 

OPTION 2 - BASIC

- Access to all 3 classes of 2.5 hours each

- Access to Google Drive link to upload homework and view/receive files

- PDF of Workshop workbook provided

- Homework to be submitted, but feedback will be general over all and not specific to yours

LESSON 1 - 5TH SEPTEMBER

- Introductions, Introduction to Italic

- Basis of Skeleton of Lower case (Shape, Proportion, Height, Slope, Branch, Ascenders, Serif, Letters, Speed, Pen Angle)

-Analysis of a manuscript (At Home)

-Necklace of Lowercase

LESSON 2 - 12TH SEPTEMBER

- Lowercase letters unjoined/joined

-Writing words

-Italic Capitals Part one (Skeleton , Key shape, Proportion, Slope)

-Joined words (At Home)

-Necklace of Words

LESSON 3 - 19TH SEPTEMBER

- Italic Capitals Part Two (All Letters are showed by Group)

-Building a piece of text using possible variation or weight of letters

-A final piece (At Home)

HOMEWORK - 

Homework will be given after each class and you will have 3-4 days to submit the homework on the google drive link. Barbara will then have the following 3 days to correct and comment on the homework so that you have the feedback during the next class. 

SUGGESTED TOOLS AND MATERIALS :

1. Required - 2 pencils/eraser/tape/squares

2. Required - Straight holder

3. Nib - You may use any of the below or any similar - 

-Mitchell #3/5

-Brause 4/5

-Pilot Parallel Pen 3.6 /6

4. Ink suggested - Hiiggins Eternal Ink or similar

5. Good Quality Calligraphy friendly Paper (Rhodia, Canson etc)
