As artists, we often forget the importance of marketing and putting ourselves out there. You’ve probably heard me say - You can be the most incredible artist but if you’re cooped up in your home not communicating what you have to offer, no one is going to discover your beautiful talent + you’re not going to make a sale.
As amazing as it is to master an art form, it’s not sustainable as a business if it doesn't bring you revenue. And before we move on I want to say that it is your choice entirely if you WANT to convert your art into your business. If you think you do, this is for you.
Marketing is the single activity that will help you reach out to more and more people which means more leads for your business. And while the term marketing is very large umbrella, and a whole course on its own, I want to touch upon just a few topics that have worked really well for me and I hope they do for you too-
1. Social Media Marketing: Instagram marketing is the single most tool that has tremendously helped us in getting clients. In all honesty, we are not very strategic about our content, but have definitely tried to get beautiful pictures of our work, post it consistently, and be very active on DM's. You can also allot a budget for ads based on the scale of your company.
If there's one thing that I would like to advise you on is the importance of showing up on Instagram. This will give your audience a chance to connect with you, understand why you do what you do and feel a sense of belonging with the company. As artists, we are our brand. People buy from US, the person behind the brand.
2. Email Marketing: I can't stress enough on the importance of email marketing. It's one of the best ways to have a one-on-one connection with your community members. Additionally, it's a very cost-effective marketing tool that brings in high conversations. Think about it this way - to connect with your audience - you can’t put all your eggs in one basket, we must distribute. Hence have multiple ways to reach them.
To get started, you'll need to pick an email marketing platform, we have this feature built on our WIX website but you can definitely explore other options.
3. Networking Communities: Apart from Instagram, being a part of networking communities and word of mouth has played a significant role in building our clientele. Network network and network! You never know when a connection comes through and work comes your way.
Networking Now India and Leap Club are two incredible clubs we're part of.
For positive word of mouth, you want to ensure that the client experience you're providing is excellent. This will definitely make them recommend your services to their circles.
4. Collaborations: Collaborations are a great way of getting access to new audiences. Let me take you through one of our really successful collabs - we worked with a 3D printing company where I designed the name units in calligraphy and they made pendants out of it. Another one would be when we collaborated with Wisdom Perfumes where they give an option to all their clients to get the bottle engraved by us. Of course, it's a bit of a trial and error, it takes time to understand what would and would not work but it's worth giving a shot.
Here were some ways that worked for us, tell us in comments ways that have helped you put yourself out there, build a clientele and bring in revenue!
"Put Yourself Out There!" is such an empowering reminder to embrace new opportunities and challenges. Whether networking or sharing your ideas, stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to great growth. If you're feeling overwhelmed with your academic journey, remember that seeking help with your master thesis can also give you the confidence to take those bold steps forward!
